Same with me but in CA, the sales tax is almost 10% so it's a big
difference. With T-Mobile though, they'll let you pay just the tax
and you can then pay the $240 over 24 months at $10/month. Plus
there will be no activation fee, and no charge for the micro SIM
(if needed).

Still, I went with Amazon, saving an extra $15 or so, but I'm
wondering if I should have gone to Walmart for the warranty?

Walmart vs Amazon:

Price about $1 different.
Amazon and Walmart charge the same tax.
The warranty is the same either place - from LG.
SIM card - doesn't one come with the phone?
Activation fee. Free if you call T-Mobile and do it.

Everything looks the same to me. Except with T-Mobile you can pay an
extra $60 (plus the tax on it) for the financing it for 24 months,
That's a pretty high interest rate, far more than just getting a bank
loan. You are effectively borrowing $180 for 24 months with a payment
of $10 a month. That's about a 30% annual rate.

Walmart's LG Optimus L9 is 19% more expensive than Amazon's L9 phone:

Walmart = $221.34
Amazon = $185.96
------------------
$35.38

Walmart: $199.88 LG Optimus L9 + $3.97 shipping + $17.49 tax = $221.34

Amazon: $179.99 LG Optimus L9 + $5.97 shipping + $0 tax = $185.96

This is a very good and astute point!

Don't chose the Walmart Family Mobile plan. Just use the prepaid buy
outright L9 for $178.88 + tax. It's the same phone.

Oh. My mistake. I agree. I found the wrong one.

As you inferred, I already have the T-Mobile family plan, so,
I don't need pre-paid stuff. I just need a phone.

Still, Amazon didn't have tax, but Walmart has a brick & mortar store,
so, it was a tradeoff between about $17 in tax saving on Amazon
versus the ease of physically returning the device at Walmart.

I opted for the $17 savings, assuming I could find a case for
the LG Optimus L9 for about that price, hence the case would be free.

I never bought from Amazon before. What happens, warranty wise, if
the phone breaks six months down the road?

Hmmmmmmm....

I saw that the amazon "said" free shipping; but it seemed to turn out to
be a (marketing) lie. The Walmart, if it says free shipping, also seemed
to be a (marketing) lie (at least for the one I had looked up prior):

In the case of Amazon, I clearly paid for shipping & handling:

In the case of Walmart, that "free" may be "to the store",
which wouldn't arrive for another month when I had checked:

I have never actually bought from Amazon or Walmart before (I only
bought because YOU suggested it!). So that gave me the confidence
I needed to buy from them.

But, neither appears to be giving "me" free shipping... (unless I'm
doing something wrong).

Amazon sometimes does not set the Free Shipping option by default and
requires you to choose the appropriate shipping radio button to select
it.

Oh. Well, maybe that was it.
It seemed to me, at the time, that I had to buy a "prime" account or
something like that to get the advertised free shipping. Oh well, too
late now...

Six months down the road, both Amazon and Walmart fob you off to the
manufacturer. Within the first 30 days, however, if it's really Amazon (and
not just an Amazon MarketPlace Merchant) you bought from, Amazon has you
covered, unless there's *obvious* fine print in the offer saying otherwise.

HTH. Still, YMMV. Cheers, -- tlvp
