Default Decisions, decisions

I've never had broadband on the net. Can't see spending $20 - 30,
whatever, for Dish or cable - if they supply a net-only service. (No DSL
in my rural area.) I have such a newspaper insert ad for Dish but haven't
followed it up.

Slow internet is very annoying but on the other hand, retired with lots
more time than money, what's the rush? And who needs on-line video like
YouTube?

Then I got to thinking which as you all know I much too seldom do. I
already have a TracFone prepaid cell phone. I make very very few phone
calls on either phone, and those to my sister for urgent things, medical
appointments, and suchlike. If I drop my land line I'll still have cell
phone service and can then use the phone money for broadband (if I can
find it for the about the same price). Somehow though, I'm reluctant to
give up my land line. Cell just doesn't feel reliable enough in case of
an emergency. Rarely, I can't contact the cell tower, even at home. And
if I lose my broadband connection I'll have no dial-up connection to fall
back on. Too cautious for this modern world?

TIA
