Default Email on feature phones

I just switched our plan to More Everything, with 10G of data to be
shared around.

I have a Samsung Intensity III dumb phone. Up to now data has been
blocked on it, but I thought I would now have email and web access.
The Opera Mini browser works OK but I discovered that Verizon
de-activated the email app March 31. To make things worse Gmail
won't work with the version of the browser on the phone.

I called Verizon and argued for a while but no joy. Wait till the
2-year contract runs out or buy a new phone at full price.

My question: is there any reason they would de-activate the email
app for dumb phones other than pressuring customers to get
smartphones?

A third option, if you can't solve your problem, would be to buy a
used Verizon smartphone. There are some pretty good deals out there
for well under a $100.

Thanks. May do that for various reasons. Under the More Everything
plan it only costs $10/mo to substitute a smartphone for a dumb
phone.

Does Verizon always let you do that--use a phone purchased from a
third party?

For the immediate problem (no email/gmail access) I came up with a
fix, installing SquirrelMail on my home Linux box. It's a web-based
interface for an IMAP server, and there's no reason Gmail can't be
the IMAP server. So I can now read Gmail by going to a page on a
website (which I already had) served by my home computer.

Another work-around could be to use your Opera Mini to access verizon's
webmail service.

And one surprisingly inexpensive VZW-branded Android handset is the old
Motorola Droid X2 -- I picked one up from an amazon 3rd party seller for
under $25, postpaid, clear ESN, ready to use. Unlike many newer handsets,
it has an accessible, replaceable battery, and a microSD card slot good for
cards of capacity up to 32GB (tucked alongside the battery alas but still).

Cheers, -- tlvp

I don't know, I never asked. I just bought a Verizon branded used
smartphone and switched it over to my account at the Verizon website
with no Verizon humans involved.

Thanks--will check it out if I decide to go that way. And thanks to
the others for the suggestions too.
