Default F-Droid

I am using a smartphone with Android 4.2.2 installed on it. (No, I
cannot upgrade to a more recent Android version!)

I heard of F-Droid being an alternate place where to get good (and
free!) apps for my phone.

Has anyone ever used it and can you recommend it as a reputable source
for apps?

Does F-Droid delete Google Play, or can the two coexist?

Thanks.

Which phone? Maybe you can move to Cyanogen Mod which is community based
development of Android. I moved a Samsung Galaxy S4 from Android 4.3 to
cm-13.0 which is Android 6.0.1.

I have a Blu Studio 5.0 II. I would be surprised if there is a custom
ROM for it...
