Default Black Friday....Jan 9, 2009

From what I can read on the various blogs from Alltel employees, who also
posted the message from their bosses, today is "Black Friday", the day the
*******s at Verizon take over to start screwing us.

Mall dealers are in denial and say it will take another year before Verizon
takes over. It's already been much longer than I expected and probably has
something to do with 2008 corporate tax advantages waiting 'til 2009.

Does anyone have different information about what's going on? I understand
the billing system went dark on Jan 6-9 for the changeover.....

Before you bitch, do your research. Billing systems did not go dark
due to the changeover and Verizon is not doing away with the brand of
Alltel for a while. Alltel spent this week doing the separation in
billing between the divested and non-divested markets, that is all,
but it is a big deal for system separation.

Want to no more? Then go to the alltel website and click on either
the "Merger Information" link or the "Verizon Wireless Integration"
link and you'll see it will be several months, at least, for further
changes to take place.

So the sky is not falling, Chicken Little.

But of course I wouldn't expect any other kind of post from Larry the
Moron.

Larry, mine is heresay as well, but I've perhaps been keeping up
better than most with the "news" releases and scuttlebut.

The billing system was down for various periods in various markets.
Mine in Greenville was back up Thursday afternoon, but with no minutes
or kB of use as yet, Saturday AM; "Estimated Usage* Since 12/05/2008
To January 10, 2009" shows on myaccount.

The public message is that nothing has changed yet, and that we will
be notified before any changes take place. So far, all plans and
features are as before. The OPINIONS of several Verizon and Alltel
store employees (corp and reseller) based on what they have heard
(which may differ from what they were toldg) is that it will be 3 to
6 months before initial merger of systems takes place, and that it
will probalby be done gradually by markets.

An issue I have not seen addressed is m2m to divested areas. My son
went to Clemson (Pickens County) and asked our local store for a
number local to there; they gave him a Seneca number (Oconee County
which is divested). I know we'll lose it, but how will we be
notified? I also know that he could have had a change done to get a
non-divested number (lives and gets bill in Greenville), but he
decided to hope that ATT takes Oconee and he gets a deal on that
dratted (my feeling, not his) iPhone.

My other concern, and probably yours as well, is that I have the
ConnectPackOne for $9.99 to use with my phone (WindozeMobile6.1).
Verizon has nothing close ... OUCH MY BILL.

I get the feeling more customers of either company would be happy than not if
Verizon junked all their plans and adopted Alltel plans (and rates).

There's no divestiture near Charleston anywhere I use it. I find this
simply amazing that the FCC has completely abandoned the American people's
interest and allowed Verizon to become the 850 Mhz monopoly in such a large
part of the country.

We will all pay very heavily for this travesty without competition for this
dispicable company.

The instant something changes, I'll dump them...contract or no contract.
I'm in the fortunate position of being retired, now, and their hold over me
for my business phone is lost. Skype on wifi becomes more usable every
day, with or without WiMax.

Verizon could care less for any of us.

I feel there will be considerable pressure from Verizon's customers to
treat them like Alltel customers are treated, too. This is why Verizon
will do everything it can to destroy Alltel's service and replace it with
Verizon's bloated nonsense and prices, to stifle the protests.

In Charleston, about half the Alltel customers have already had a good dose
of Verizon's attitudes and service, the reason they fled to Alltel in the
first place. Screw with them and I believe there will be massive churning,
at least here. Charlestonians have always been kind of an independent lot.

I bet the customers of both companies would be MUCH happier if BOTH
companies had the plans of Cricket!

Cricket home coverage areas are too small. I can use my Alltel phone anywhere
in NC as well as all other states where they have coverage. Since I use
cellular as a secondary phone line only and most of the calling I do is in
network, I pay less than I would for any Cricket plan (no monthly minutes, but
free nights and weekends and in-network calls).

You're absolutely right. If Alltel goes unmolested by the dispicable
Verizon, I see no reason to switch. But, Verizon's history of takeovers
preceeds it. I'm preparing for worst-case-scenario...5G/mo for $60 +
25c/MB, $250/GB above 5GB. That isn't internet service. That's USURY!

I have Alltel's now-defunct $39.95/700 mins NC/SC regional plan.
Verizon got rid of those plans long before Black Friday. They simply
disappeared. Alltel added a hundred more mins because I'm a nice guy to
prevent churning long ago. Verizon forces everyone to buy nationwide
minutes 95% of the customers never use and don't need at half the
minutes. Forced onto that plan or having my real internet service
destroyed will result in my conversion to Cricket, which works fine
around Charleston and is expanding rapidly. Now retired, I don't need
rural coverage.

All this will become a totally moot point if the Feds pass the NO
CELLPHONE WHILE DRIVING law, nationwide. Everyone in the country will
KNOW you're on-the-road when they get your voicemail and no expect you
to answer the phone because it will be illegal. That voicemail might as
well be Skype's I can check into from any free wifi this place is more
and more covered with every month. Sitting in the window of a no-wifi
burger joint like Hardee's, you can connect to 4 or 5 free wifis from
the surrounding hotel/motel/restaurants/etc. and have service 5 times
faster than sellphone. There will be no point to buying it if I cannot
use it cruising down the road, phone or data. I'll save $70/mo minus
$50/year for Skype Unlimited with its own phone number(s).
