Support for Google Voice ending May 15, 2014
Last Updated: May 07, 2014 10:57PM UTC

Google has decided to stop 3rd party access to Google Voice as of May 15th 2014.

May 15th is fast approaching...here's what you need to know about the upcoming Google Voice transition:

1. After May 15, 2014, Talkatone WILL NOT work with Google Voice. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!

After May 15, 2014, you WILL NOT be able to use Talkatone with Google Voice or Google Chat, which means you will not be able to make/receive Google Voice or Google Chat calls, nor will you be able to text/message using Google Voice or Google Chat.

2. We recommend you transition to a new Talkatone account prior to May 15, 2014 to ensure continuous service. You can do this directly in the app.

When you transition to a new Talkatone account, you will receive:

a. FREE, local US phone number
b. FREE inbound calls
c. FREE texting
d. Up to 20 minutes of FREE outbound calls minutes per month (with the ability to purchase additional outbound minutes in-app for a very, very competitive rate)

3. You can forward your Google Voice number to your new Talkatone number to continue to receive inbound calls on your old Google Voice number. Please contact us for step-by-step instructions on how to do this.

4. You can port your Google Voice number to Talkatone. Please contact us for step-by-step instructions.

Thanks again for your support as we go through this transition process. We know change is not easy, but we believe that our new Talkatone service is even better than Google Voice, and we look forward to continuing to provide you with an outstanding communications experience!

Happy Talking!

Am I close here?

There is a huge thread on comp.mobile.android titled:
"What's a good talkatone replacement for free reception from landlines/mobile phones?"

All you could possibly want to know is in that huge recent
thread (it was started on May 4th, 2014) which was all about
how to replace the free US calling & free US SMS texting that
we had with 3rd-party apps which interfaced with Google Voice
under the covers.

In a nutshell, here's how I interpret what happened:
----
1. In the beginning, there was a google voice API ...
2. 3rd-party tablet apps, such as Talkatone, took advantage of that API.
3. All was well in tablet free calling & free SMS texting land.
----
4. Then Google got wise/upset/greedy/sued/whatever ...
5. Google turned off 3rd-party API access to Google Voice as of May 15th.
6. All became very bad in tablet free calling & free SMS texting land.
----
7. For me, this killed Talkatone.
8. I needed a new source of free US calling & SMS texting on the tablet.
9. The solution, for my iPad, was a combination of two tools

Google Hangouts app for the iPad on the iPad:
a. Unlimited free US phone calls out from your iPad
b. Unlimited free phone calls in to your iPad
----
Google Voice app for the iPhone on the iPad:
c. Unlimited free US SMS text out from your iPad
d. Unlimited free US SMS text in to your iPad

As far as I know, there is no other app out there, at this time,
which allows free unlimited US calls and SMS texting on the iPad
or Android tablet other than the combined solution above.

Note: A pre-requisite for this to work is both a Google account
and a Google Voice number, both of which are requirements for
using the Google Hangouts app and the Google Voice app on the
tablet.
