What if you signed up for service with the carrier before text
messaging existed, and now they're charging you 20 each to receive
junk texts?

Interesting point, but moot with T-Mobile, I believe- AFAIK, they, and
they're predecessors have always had texting.

As to, say, Verizon, who's been around longer than texting has, you
arguably would've had several opportunities to leave without penalty,
each time they raised the texting rate.
